Suiseki viewing stone and daiza
Suiseki is the Japanese art of appreciating naturally shaped stones that suggest landscapes or figures. Rather than carving or altering them, the beauty lies in how the stone itself evokes mountains, rivers, or scenes from nature. My wife and I discovered this rock on a weekend getaway on Whidbey Island, and it had a naturally flat bottom, so it was perfect for suiseki.
I carved a daiza out of cherry wood, with a jigsaw, a router, and a lot of hand carving and sanding. It’s finished with natural Tung oil.
